NRA HOME FIREARM SAFETY COURSE

Course Outline

Course Goal: To teach the basic knowledge and skills, and to explain the attitude necessary for safe handling and storage of guns in the home.

Length of Course: 4 hours. The course length may vary depending on the instructor/student ratio and the participants' abilities.


    Lesson I: Rules for Safe Gun Handling

    Learning Ojectives:

  1. State the course goal
  2. State the major causes of gun accidents
  3. STate the basic elements of gun safety
  4. Sate the three fundamental safe gun handling rules
  5. State the safety rules when using or storing guns
  6. State who is responsible for teaching gun safety to children
  7. Be aware tht firearm accidents have been on the decline

    Lesson II: Identifying and Unloading Different Firearms

    Learning Ojectives:

  8. Define handgun, rifle and shotgun
  9. Identify the different types of hands and kndow their parts
  10. Unload the various types of handguns
  11. Identify the different types of rifles and know their parts
  12. Unload the different types of rifles and know their parts
  13. Identify the different types of shotguns and know their parts
  14. Unload various types of shotguns
  15. Be familiar with muzzleloading firearms

    Lesson III: Practical Exercise in Safe Fun Handling

    Learning Ojectives:

  16. Safely handle the different types of firearms mentioned in Lesson II and unload them

    Lesson IV: Identifying and Unloading Different Firearms

    Learning Ojectives:

  17. Identify different tyupes of rifle cartridges, handgun cartridges and shotgun shells
  18. Explain the firing sequence of modern ammunition
  19. Explain how to clean firearms properly
  20. Explain how to store firearms and ammunition properly
