- Safe area in home - windowless room / closet / hallway
- Get under sturdy piece of furniture / mattress / cushions
- Mobile Home - move to sturdier building
- Smell gas - immediately leave your area/home, do not turn off/on lights, do not use the a phone in your house, call 911 from cell phone outside of home or use neighbors home.
- Have your car ready - preventive maintenance, full gas tank, flares, jumper cables, seasonal supplies
- Finalize your disaster supplies kit - does your pet have a kit?
- Plan for pets? Nearest shelter that accepts pets in Sumter Co. is in Bushnell!
- Clean your yard of all debris - bring in patio furniture, move plants in pots to garage, etc.
- Leave swimming pools filled - super chlorinate water, turn off propane tanks
- Have on hand One gallon of water per person or pet per day
- Copies of Important papers - birth/marriage certificates, passports, driver license, social security cards, wills, insurance contracts, utility bill for proof of residency, financial statements, car title; important phone numbers, map of neighborhood with house numbers, names, & phone #'s; list of account numbers, retirement papers (DD 214), extra set of house/car keys, picture of your pet and any identifying markings, rabies certificate, vet's name and phone number, water proof bag to keep these in.
- Beware of snakes and insects and animals driven to higher ground
- Power Outage - turn off or disconnect motor driven appliances to prevent damage from power surges,
- Fill bathtub with water for washing and flushing toilet
- Turn the refrigerator and freezer to coldest settings
- One week worth of non-perishable food - don't forget manual can opener
- Food will stay frozen for up to 48 hrs if a freezer is "packed full" and door is kept closed. Food in partly filled freezer may stay frozen for 24 hrs. Fill empty freezer spaces with reusable ice containers or milk jugs filled 4/5 full of water and frozen.
- Food - canned ready-to-eat meats, fruits, vegetables, beans; canned or boxed juices, soup, peanut butter/crackers, granola bars/sports bars, trail mix, dry cereal, etc.
- First Aid kit - don't forget aspirin/non aspirin analgesic, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids, etc.
- Tools and Emergency Cash
- Sanitation / Hygiene items - if you have to evacuate
