FIGMO 'Precious' BOHICA Silver City, New Mexico |
![]() ![]() |
"I was born an American; I will live as an American; I shall die an American."
Daniel Webster, Public Official
Figmo was born on 11 November 1866, in a wagon headed for the Oregon territory. This was unusually late for a wagon train to be headed for the American frontier.
Figmo's mother and father caught the "fever" shortly after his birth and passed away. Figmo was taken in by a wagon being driven by a group of women headed out west to set up a salon.
Figmo's benefactor, Martha Holiday, one of the spoiled doves, who took on the responsibility of raising Figmo, and started calling him "Precious."
The wagon train stopped in Fort Green River, Wyoming, they were a little off the beaten track for the winter. Martha Holiday decided that this was the place to open her salon and ply her trade. Martha saw to Figmo's education, teaching him to read and write.
On 18 August 1872, Martha was beaten and almost killed by a drunken cowboy while plying her trade. Figmo found the cowboy laughing and telling all his friends what he had done. Figmo emptied both barrels of a 12 gauge into the cowboy. Martha passed away from the beating later that night and Figmo left town.
Not much is know about Figmo's life from 1872 to 1884. Other than the time that he killed the cowboy at Fort Green River, and the fact that there are several other killings credited to him of cowboys and gamblers who were caught abusing salon girls or children. Figmo settled in Silver City, NM around 1887, doing a little ranching and gambling.

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...............There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.", Theodore Roosevelt, 1919
