NRA BASIC PERSONNAL PROTECTION IN THE HOME COURSE

Course Outline

Course Goal: To develop in the students the basic knowledge, skills and attidue essential to the safe and efficient use of a firearm for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense.

Length of Course: 8 hours. The course length may vary depending on the instructor/student ratio and the participants' abilities.

Lesson I: Introduction to Defensive Shooting

Learning Ojectives:

  1. Explain the importance of using a firearm responsibly and ethically for personal protection.
  2. Explain the importance of developing the proper mindset for using a firearm for personal protection and facing a life-threatening encounter.
  3. Explain and evaluate their state of mental awaremess using the four levels of awareness.
  4. Explain the imporatance of mental preparation and physical training for a potentially life-threatening confrontation.

    Lesson II: Basic Defensive Pistol Skills

    Learning Ojectives:

  5. Explain and demonstrate the fundamentals of defensive markmanship
  6. Explain defensive accuracy
  7. Shoot targets in the center of massusing aimed shots from a two-handed standing position
  8. Explain the differences between cover and concealment, and identify examples of each
  9. Shoot targets in the center of mass:
    Lesson III: Firearms and the Law:
    Possession, Onwership, and the Use of Deadly Force

    Learning Ojectives:

  10. Explain key provisions of the law pertaining to the purchase, transfer and possession of pistols
  11. State key provisions and restrictions within the law pertaining to the use of Deadly Force
  12. Explain potential criminal and civil legal actions that may be taken
  13. Explain where they may find detailed legal information for their specific jurisdiction

    Lesson IV: Strategies for Home Safety and Responding to a Violent Confrontation

    Learning Ojectives:

  14. Exdplain strategies and methods to enhance their personal safety at home
  15. Describe strategies for responding to a potentially life-thretening encounter
  16. Explain the importance of mentally preparing for the aftermath of a ciolent confrontation
  17. Explain methods for safely storing a personal protection pistol

    Lesson V: Selection a PIstol for Self-Defense

    Learning Ojectives:

  18. Identify the criteria for selecting a pistol and ammunition suited to their individual self-defense needs
  19. Identify the major cartridge designs available for practice and personal protection and explain the use, advantage, and disadvantages of each type

    Lesson VI: Sport Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities

    Learning Ojectives:

  20. Identify organizations, associations, clubs, and businesses that may help them hone, enhance their personal protection skills
  21. Explain methods and precautions for dry-fire practice

    Lesson VII: Course Review and Examination

    Learning Ojectives:

  22. Successfully complete the NRA Personal Protection In The Home Course written examination
